Week Vaca

Sunday night the girls and I headed up to South Bend to stay at my parents house until Friday. I wish we could have just stayed the whole summer. It was so nice to have an extra set of hands this week. My mom and I had hoped to get more done than we did, like starting our training for the 5k we signed up for in July, but even with 2 sets of hands, the days went super fast taking care of the 2 girls.

We got to see friends and family that we otherwise probably wouldn't have seen for awhile, so that was nice. Seeing them all made me really rather live up there than Terre Haute because it seems as though we are always going up for a reason so getting together with friends and some family is just not doable with our other engagements.

Natalie got just as spoiled as Aubrey. I think almost everyone that brought Aubrey a gift, they had a couple for Natalie as well!  Natalie really had fun playing with some friends she hasn't seen in probably 6 months or so. She also had fun playing with the play kitchen that Amanda and I grew up playing with. That kept her entertained for a long time.

We made a trip to Target, which was interesting because there was no way I would have been able to do it by myself with their carts. Natalie was too young to sit in the giant stroller that has kids seats completely separate from the cart and in order to fit Aubrey's carseat in the cart, I wasn't able to keep the seat available for Natalie to sit in. So, my mom took a cart, as did I. You will not be seeing me toting around 2 carts throughout the store, plus controlling 2 kids...life is getting interesting! We also made a trip Bobby's parents' house to visit and play. Today, we stopped by the Strawberry/Potato Creek Festival in North Liberty. I was even able to get a much needed haircut (I think it had been 6 months since I had one) while my mom watched the kids...I decided to get it chopped off.

Although Natalie had a few meltdowns she was very good and had a great time playing, swimming, and visiting. Aubrey did not want to sleep very well at night, so I was able to get maybe 2 hours of sleep at a time, and last night I only got probably 4 hours total all night long, which made the drive back to Terre Haute today a sleepy one. I cannot wait for Aubrey to start sleeping better...I. NEED. SLEEP!

Speaking of the drive today, we made it to about Westfield (2 hours into our 4 hour drive) and not Aubrey (who I assumed I would have to stop for) but instead Natalie was the one throwing a fit!  So, we stopped by Aunt Amanda and Uncle Matt's house for a stretch break and a feeding break for Aubrey. I think Aubrey would have probably made it the whole trip, but Natalie would not take a good nap in the car for some reason. I'm thinking when we go to North Carolina in October that we may instead put Natalie forward facing and see if that helps at all because she used to do so good in the car...or hopefully we are just going through a phase and she gets better by then.

As I was driving I was thinking...how in the world, if I am by myself driving with the girls, do I go to the bathroom with both of them?  I can't leave them in the car and I definitely can't hold Aubrey and expect Natalie to just stand there in the stall with me. So...I guess if I ever have to go to the bathroom in that scenario, I'll just have to hold it...haha!

I have lots of pictures to share since we were gone for awhile.

You can't see her other hand, but she had one hand on the steering wheel and the other hanging out the window...haha

She is starting to look a lot like my mom when she was a little girl!

She loves this horsey...and not too long ago she couldn't get on herself or touch the ground...getting so big, too quick!

Completely Overwhelmed

When I started this blog, the whole purpose in my mind was to document Natalie's (and now Aubrey's) life so that they could look back and read about all their milestones, but as well to learn from my experiences of being a mom/wife for if they choose to get married/have children (in the far away future).  With that being said, this post will probably be looked upon as being negative, but I just want to paint a realistic picture of adjusting to being a Mommy of 2 wonderfully, beautiful girls and how much work/frustration there will be/could be in the beginning.  I know things will get easier, but it is really hard being a mom to 2!

**Warning** This is a long one and in my perspective (as always).

Although I would not trade them for the world, I am just completely and utterly overwhelmed!  Maybe it's a bit of postpartum depression with all the changing hormones, sleep deprivation, and big adjustments at home. My mom has offered to come down to Terre Haute and help whenever I say I needed it, but I know she has lots of interviews for potential new jobs, etc. and I didn't want to take her away from that. So, on Sunday afternoon, I decided I could not be at home any longer and decided to take the girls to my parents' house. This was the first long drive Aubrey has been on, so I wasn't sure how it would go, but off we went even though Bobby was not a huge fan of the idea. Aubrey slept for the first 2 hours or so until we got to Kokomo and she ate just a little. That woke Natalie up, so Natalie stayed awake for the last 1.5 hours of the trip. We arrived a little after midnight.

I don't think Bobby quite understands how I feel (maybe because I don't quite express it other than the silent treatment), but you would think he would see how frazzled I am. I think because he goes to work, he thinks I'm not really working at home with the 2 girls. I guess it seems as though I just sit around and eat bon-bon's all day long. However, it is much different than that. The whining and crying really wares on my nerves and drives me absolutely crazy!  I feel like all I do is change diapers because when one is wet, you can bet it's time to change the other one. On top of that, I'm feeding Aubrey all the time (seems like constantly). I feel like I'm not being a very good mom to Natalie because I am completely exhausted and really don't have the patience for her at times since I'm constantly telling her "NO" or stop, etc, etc, etc. She does not listen at all!!!! It's never-ending! My only saving grace is if they sleep at the same time and by that time I don't feel like doing anything around the house because I just want to enjoy the peace and quiet all to myself while I have the chance, or take a quick shower until one of them wakes up. I don't even know how many times I've been spit up on and feel absolutely disgusting. Laundry is always piling up and there seems to a load to be done at least every day. Mealtimes...yeah...I've already addressed that before!

I think Bobby quickly forgets how exhausting all the whining/crying can be now that he is back to work. Plus, on top of work, he gets to escape to at least 2 softball games a week, then go work outside or work on the basement or just plain fall asleep on the couch/chair/wherever. It must be nice because I'm stuck with no time to myself until bedtime (which for Natalie is sometime between 7:15 and 8:30p) but then Aubrey is usually awake and will need fed between Natalie's bedtime and me going to bed (usually around midnight because of Aubrey's eating schedule) only to get up in a couple hours and do it again. All I want sometimes is even just a measly 15 minutes to myself (longer would be nice too) when Bobby is home.

What really sent me over the edge was on Saturday (well really several things) when I asked Bobby if he could watch Aubrey while I took Natalie around the neighborhood garage sales (we have maybe 20 houses total in the neighborhood, so nothing huge). When I asked him he was sitting on the couch watching ESPN or something on TV. Aubrey had just eaten, so it would have been super easy; however, the response I got was that he couldn't and why couldn't I take both girls because he had to go outside and mow. So...off I went with both girls in tow around our neighborhood and was back in less than 30 minutes. The mower may have been out of the garage, but was not running when we got back to the house (and the yard was not finished). The fence and the basement rooms should be finished by now (at least our end of things to do), but Bobby drags his feet and piddles around so much I cannot stand it. From my perspective, he has to have someone hold his hand to complete any part of the project because rarely do I see him doing much on his own without someone else's help and I'm not talking about jobs that require more than one person to complete.  I should have known from the very beginning to just hire out every part of the job for the fence/basement because they would have been done a whole heck of a lot quicker, that's for sure!

Then, on Friday, I was going to take the girls to Bobby's softball game (so we could get out of the house), but Bobby responded with "Do you really think we should take Aubrey out?" On Sunday, I was going to take both girls to church and Bobby responded with the same thing once again. I seriously feel like a prisoner in my own home. We are supposed to go to his niece/nephew's birthday party in a couple of weeks, but I guess we shouldn't really take Aubrey out because it will be in public!  Taking the girls to the doctor and the post office (spaced apart) went smoothly, but I don't quite yet feel comfortable (still I guess a little scared) to take them out by myself to the grocery store, etc. I still remember being nervous taking Natalie by myself for the first few times. However, I'm to the point where I just need to get over that fear and just do it if I want to get out of my house EVER!  But, then again, I'm with the girls...I never get to leave and do anything on my own (at least for my own pleasure) like Bobby does!  When I do ask Bobby to help out, he makes me feel as though I am putting him out and that he has far more important things to do. Maybe if I saw progress being made when he is doing things to the basement/yard/fence, then I wouldn't get so upset, but when the progress is slower than a snail and their is no visible change, I find it hard to believe he will actually be doing what he says. I don't know how many times he just falls asleep when I'm still up with both kids or doing something.

Maybe while us girls are gone for a little bit, Bobby can get things done since we aren't around to cramp his style. No excuses for naps during this time for him because nothing should be wearing him down...no screaming, whining, tantrums, etc.

My advice to you girls:
1. I hope you both find a husband (if you choose to marry) that will set aside his own pleasures or at least reduce them, in order to give you all the support/assistance you need when you have kids.
2. Your mom will always be here for you girls and will be offering all the support/help I can give (my mom...your grandma Lisa (and grandpa Randy, too) have been a huge help/support system)
3. Don't be afraid to ask for help!
4. Take time for yourselves (demand it) and don't feel guilty about it because you need that time for yourself in order to be able to give yourself fully to being a mom/wife.
5. Live close to your parents so we can easily help you out at anytime :)

I love you girls to pieces! I hope you both find that this blog is helpful when you get older and know that if you end up going through the same things...you aren't alone!

Updates on the girls:

Aubrey: She lost the rest of her cord on Sunday so now she actually has a belly button and will be able to take her first bath soon!  Yay! She is becoming more alert everyday!

Natalie: Starting to show some separation anxiety!  When Bobby walks out the door and doesn't take her with even if he is just leaving and coming right back, she throws a crying/screaming fit. She did the same thing with my dad this morning!  Poor girl!

Aubrey's 1st Doctor's Appointment

Today was Aubrey's 1st doctor's appointment. I don't think she was a big fan or maybe she was a little hungry...maybe a combination. I can't say that I would be too happy either if I had to be naked except for a diaper for my appointment. Bobby met us girls at the doctor's office, which I am very, very thankful because although Natalie was "good," she needed much corralling!  Not quite sure how I'm going to do it after this one, but we'll manage.

Aubrey weighed in at 8lb 3.2oz and her head circumference remains at 35cm. They didn't do a height today, but will at her 1 month check-up scheduled for June 29th.

The doctor was impressed with her weight gain and of course that I was breastfeeding. She said she usually doesn't see much weight gain at the 1st appointment, usually it is down from the original birth weight, but Aubrey has proved that she is a great eater even with spitting a lot up at times!  I just love her little baby fat rolls :) The doctor also praised Bobby for being at the appointment since she doesn't see many dads come to appointments.

After the appointment, we all went to Wendy's to get some lunch, well Bobby and I at least. Aubrey slept the whole time and Natalie enjoyed snacking on our fries and chicken sandwich. I was glad Aubrey slept because I am not a huge fan of breastfeeding in public and definitely do not want to breastfeed in a public restroom...ick!  Although breastfeeding this time around is a million times easier, my big boobs do not assist with easy clothing transitions while covering myself with something and getting Aubrey in a good position all at the same time without exposing myself. Only in the comfort of my own home with just our little family present can I do this, otherwise I am in the recliner/rocker in our room.

The start of our 2nd day being just us 3 girls wasn't the greatest, but it could have been much, much worse!  Today, both have been pretty whiny with Natalie requiring a morning nap at 10a after getting up around 8:30a. Aubrey has wanted to be held a lot today and they both seem to cry at the same exact times. I was, however, able to get myself ready (in sporadic spurts, even painted my toenails...much needed), Aubrey bathed and dressed, and Natalie dressed and fed lunch before leaving the house today. I wanted to leave the house by 11:40a, but ended up leaving about 7 minutes late.  Not really too bad for the 1st attempt at leaving the house by myself with my 2 girls!  Both girls are now napping...I have been really fortunate that they seem to nap around the same times, which I hope remains a trend and becomes quite the habit!

Even though the girls have been whiny today, they were super sweet this morning when both were awake. Natalie allowed Aubrey to lay with her for a decent amount of time before Natalie was ready to get down and play.

Love these girls!

First Day Alone

Today was my first day alone with my 2 little princesses since Bobby headed back to work. My girls were very nice to me after both getting up early, I thought I was in for a very long day, but I was wrong. Things couldn't have gone anymore smoother than they did today. Here is a little schedule (from what I remember) from today:

6:30a: Aubrey woke up to eat (again every 2-3 hours throughout the night)
7:15a: Natalie woke up when Bobby went in to see her before he left for work (even though he knows better)
7:20-8:00a: Aubrey slept while Natalie and I cuddled in bed and watched a little Curious George
8:00a: Natalie went back to sleep
(I slept off an on in between 8 and 8:30)
8:30a: Aubrey wanted to eat...again!
9:00a: I got a shower...woohoo!
9:20a: Aubrey ate again I think...or maybe she just needed burped more...can't remember.
10:30a: Natalie woke up
(I vacuumed the house...yes even the closet Bobby! Did laundry, too!)
11:30a: Aubrey ate and slept again
12(noon): Natalie ate lunch and behaved good as well (thank goodness they didn't want to eat at the same time at all today)
12:40p-3:00p: Natalie took a good nap
12:45p: Aubrey ate and fell asleep (sleepy girl today)
1p-3p: Mommy got to nap too!

You get the point by now!  I got some housework done, had well-behaved girls, and got a nap too! I would call that a very successful first day being all alone as a Mommy of 2 beautiful baby girls!

Aubrey got her first piece of mail today (social security card) with her name on it...so cute seeing her name printed!

Natalie update:
- She is becoming quite the climber...she does well on steps and is now climbing up on boxes...watch out!
- She is a pro at undoing velcro. She undoes the velcro on the back of her Violet dog and on her musical lamb that hangs on her crib...that is until she unvelcros it from her crib too!
- She is a squealer/screamer even when she is happy and playing.
- She loves her sister and enjoys trying to feed her the fake cookies from her toybox :)
- She loves giving hugs and kisses...she really is such a sweet girl and I hope she forever stays that way!

Aubrey has her 1st doctor's appointment tomorrow. We'll see how that goes alone! I hope the girls are as nice to me tomorrow as they were today!  Another reason I wish Bobby would have stayed home until the end of this week.

Last Day of Daddy's Leave

Today is the last day that Bobby will be home because tomorrow he returns back to work even though I did ask him to stay home until the end of the week because I think it is silly to go back on a Thursday...but whatever!

This is how Bobby spent his afternoon...thanks for all the help!

By looking at this picture you would think that Bobby is the one that gave birth 2 weeks ago and has to get up every 2-3 hours each night to feed Aubrey.  In his defense (but not much of one) he did get up at 4:30a, but didn't go back to sleep because he said he couldn't. Yesterday, he basically slept all day because he said his stomach hurt. I slept off and on while I could because I was running a low grade fever...just like I did with Natalie, and it went away in 24 hours...thank goodness. Bobby did cut the trim today and I painted it, but no naps for Mommy! Plus, Natalie had diaper rash that made her scream when you changed her diaper, which she still has, but tolerating a little better. Aubrey seems to be happy and healthy and sleepy!

Tomorrow will be interesting since it will be the first day that I will have the 2 girls all to myself. Please pray for patience and good behavior all around because we will need it!

Here is a project...another idea from Pinterest that I completed. Much better than having all the hairclips and headbands in Natalie's dresser drawer. At least now, I can see all of them!

Sisterly Love

This weekend, my family was down here since my dad had a meeting for work in Terre Haute (very rare)! They were a tremendous help, both with the girls and with the basement!  Amanda came down too!  Natalie loved all the attention, which she needed too since my time is consumed with Aubrey at least every 2-3 hours with her feeding schedule.

There are not enough words of appreciation I can express to tell them all how much it means to me to have all the help and support. My dad has put in a TON of manual labor hours helping with the basement and the fence, and my mom has helped out a TON with the girls! Without them, the basement progress would have been a LOT slower and I would have already lost my mind taking care of 2 little girls, especially dealing with Natalie at mealtimes.  However, I better gain a lot more patience in the next few days because Bobby is going back to work on Thursday and I am going to be all alone with my 2 precious babies!

Basement Progress: Painting done (except window sills), all doors (except bi-fold closet in guest room) are in, drop ceiling is in Bobby's office, trim needs painted and put up but it's been bought and most of it cut I believe, ceiling fans/lights need installed but have been bought, lights need installed in closets, electrical needs to be connected, carpets being measured tomorrow and hopefully installed next Monday. That means hopefully by next week we are moving Bobby's office downstairs and can finally set-up Aubrey's room!

Natalie has been so good and sweet with Aubrey. She loves to give her kisses and has been gentle with her and is always curious about her when she cries or is just making little noises. As Bobby says, Aubrey's cry is something else!  It is a high-pitched squeal-like cry, much different from Natalie from what I remember. I just love my girls!
